How Important is Audio Conferencing Software in 2020?

Video chat and conferencing have become so commonplace you wonder if there is any place left for audio conferencing software in 2020. The general perception is that a video chat allows a virtual face to face interaction that is oh-so-satisfying. Besides you can view and share presentations online so audio conferencing software is likely to get the status of a poor cousin. However, that is not so. Conferencing software with a decided accent on audio still rules the roost.

Talking gets work done
Business is about talking and getting things done. Teams within an organization need to talk and come to an understanding or share knowledge. If they decide to video conference it goes well if the supporting bandwidth is available. If not there are all sorts of issues such as jitters and lags and this also affects audio. Video conferencing software may actually limit audio bit rate and that means voice clarity suffers. In that case a person has to repeat himself often to be able to make himself clear. This certainly is not conducive to getting things done. Now think of audio conferencing software. The entire bandwidth is dedicated to audio. The software integrates all the multitude of codecs and transcoding in a superior way to handle even slow internet speeds and issues of dropped packets. You have crystal clear audio quality regardless of number of participants and each one’s internet speed connectivity. Using the conferencing software becomes pleasurable and productive.

Not everyone uses webcam or has a smartphone with camera
Not everyone who joins a conference has a webcam attached to the desktop or a smartphone. Even if a camera is present some participants may be multitasking and may not wish to exclusively devote themselves to the ongoing conference as would happen if it were a video conference.

Convenience
Even if they do have video cam facility it may not always be convenient to show oneself or see the other party who may have others listening in to the chat or conference. Audio only ensures a measure of privacy and secrecy that is desirable under certain circumstances. Further, video can take attention away from audio and a participant may miss what has been said. Audio only ensures perfect focus on what is going on.

It is affordable for all and simple
Voice conferencing does not place heavy demands on internet consumption so you pay less as does everyone who joins a conference. A conference may last for a couple of hours but you need not worry about high usage and bills.

Audio conferencing software has other uses too beyond plain chat and conferencing in 2020. You can use it to push notifications and pre-recorded messages to employees or those in your telephone list.

There are fewer issues with audio codecs and protocols whereas video is a minefield of protocols, codecs and bitrates as well as containers which makes it very complicated to handle.

With 5G gaining traction it would seem that video will pose no problems but still, simplicity is elegance and audio only means better audio quality and that is important in business.  Get audio conferencing software that is smart and takes care of all audio codecs to ensure a seamless conversation and you will not miss video all that much.
